'Weird and Wonderful'- Initial Ideas

Statement of Intent

The genres I have enjoyed so far in photography include Portraiture, Landscape and Documentary. I feel that my experiments in these 3 genres were the strongest, and ones that were most successful.
Portraiture allowed me to be creative, and allowed me to relate to myself. Landscape, also was the one genres that I was most inspired by, with the use of colours and the technical aspects of creating a landscape photograph.
Lastly, Documentary was a challenge, however, I was inspired by the story telling that comes with documentary and it instantly gave me ideas for my own work.

I am inspired by the work of, Christopher McKenney, Brooke Shaden and Lissy Elle Lariccha. I am interested by the conceptual and simplicity of these photographers pieces. All of these photographers include aspects of self portraiture, landscape and documentary between them. I have found all 3 photographers using further research. They all present a surreal aspect to their photographs. I am inspired by the darkness and horror of Mckenny's photographs, both visually and emotionally and also the dreamlike effect of all of my chosen photographers. I am intrigued by the powerful message that these photographs can create, using it as a source of expression.

For my Weird and Wonderful project, I intend to create a series of photographs using the main genre of conceptual photography. Along with this, I intend to explore portraiture, landscape and documentary photography within this project. Essentially, I intend to tell a story within my photographs. My photographs will be based mainly on dark fantasy. I intend to explore the nature of reality and nightmares. This links to the theme of Weird and Wonderful as I can take something normal, and turn it into something dark, making the audience think about the reality of the photographs and question it's purpose. I would like to focus on an emotional aspect to it, using photography as an expressive medium. Using conceptual photography, will allow me to become creative within my project, it will also add an extra ‘Weird’ element. I intend to use a mixture of studio and location work depending on the narrative that I choose with my developments.
Moodboard on Weird and Wonderful
As part of my research, i'm starting to develop my ideas and choose the path that I want to take using the title 'Weird and Wonderful.' I created a Pinterest board of photography that I was particularly interested in. We were given the task to carry out our first photo shoot relating to our area of interest. I was drawn to this photographer Anja Papenfuss as it portrays a horror/weird theme to it. I felt that I could experiment with this successfully as I would use the studio lighting, which would then help me develop my knowledge on using the studio, and then use cling film to help recreate this photograph.

Here are my experiments using the photograph above as my inspiration.  I used a black background in the studio, and I only used one light. I turned all the lights off in the studio and used the flash as my source of light to create a harsh shadow that relates to the photograph by Papenfuss. As I was using the genre of self portraiture, I used a timer on my camera, yet creating the right composition was quite difficult due to not being able to see what was in the frame. Onto post editing, I cropped the photographs so that you wouldn't see the cling film I was holding across my face, therefore, these compositions, I am mainly placed to the left side of the photograph. In Photo shop, I enhanced the brightness and the contrast so that the shadows were more enhanced and sharp. I then added the black and white filter over the top of the photograph. Lastly, I added slight noise to the photographs to create a grained effect, similarily to Papenfuss's original photograph.
